At Plaster Blaster, I managed to get my L2 on 'One Butt-Ugly Phoenix' on a K185, but I just wasn't impressed with the boost on that motor for that rocket, because of the nose weight that it needs to carry to be stable. The flight was great, which you can see here but it arched a bit much for my liking.
I decided when building the phoenix, that if I've got a mount, I might as well make it able to handle the largest motor that is available for that diameter, which is why the electronics bay is in the side of the rocket, and not in a coupler higher up. That stated, next to a CTI L730, the AT K700 is the biggest commercial load that I can fly in California, so I thought it was time...
The flight was in the dead of January, and it was VERY cold (I've lived in California all of my life - I never even knew what 20 degrees felt like) and got a bit windy by the end of the day, but I had a good time, and it was very cool to see that rocket on that motor. Final tally, with a cracked fillet, a shredded drogue, a tangled shroud line, and too much BP in the tether for Dual Deploy, and a main that never came out, the boost was well worth it. I'll fix the damage, learn from my mistakes, and try it again, but 6800', and 7mph shy of supersonic isn't a bad personal best, and second flight for this rocket. Again, all of the good stuff is up here.
