Why Rockets?

Why anything? Rockets have always held a great fascination of mine, since early childhood. From the first launch of the Space Shuttle Columbia in 1981, I was always fascinated with everything about space travel, mild astronomy, and scientific research. But it's in my nature to build things. LEGO bricks provided me with much entertainment growing up, and aside from Semi Trucks, and Cars for my LEGO city, one of the things I made the most were rockets, be it simple rockets, or some extravagant space travel system.

When I was about 13, I got to experience first hand, the building and flying of Estes Model Rockets, and I was hooked. I don't remember which kit was first, but I had several rockets, from Hawkeye, and Helio Copter to Super Nova Payloader, and Comanche 3 and even a Space Shuttle of my own. I started building my own rockets from crashed and recovered scraps of the things that didn't fly right, including the one three stage flight of my Comanche 3 that took one too many left turns. I even made an extra booster set for my Space Shuttle that used two C motors.

Through the tragedy of growing up, I have since lost all of the rockets I used to have, but in 2001, I got back into it. I bought a collection of rockets, and began building again, including several designs from scratch. That's when my rocket education really began.

Initially a joke with my Brother, I suggested that we have a competition to see who can build a rocket that goes the highest. In researching techniques to make a good altitude rocket, I read Stein's book, Handbook of Model Rocketry (which I would suggest to every rocketeer) and I stumbled upon Rock Sim and the world of High Powered Rocketry (HPR). This (link) video is what got my attention, and I blame it all on Wedge Oldham. It was this last discovery that has grasped me so tightly, and enabled me to work toward my dream of creating my own rockets.

Follow along in my journey toward Certification, and the design, fabrication, and flight of some of my projects. This site will be updated (as frequently as I can find time) so check back every once in a while, and see what's going on.

Also, as I go to rocket launches, and events in the area, (and some far away) I will do my best to keep up with posting choice videos and photos that I taken from those events. Though if you don't see it under my projects list, or in my fleet, I don't own it.

Enjoy!
